Patients First is the result of Emily Carr’s partnership with Fraser Health Authorities, which is based on innovative design research methodologies that Emily Carr researchers, including faculty members Jonathan Aitken and Deborah Shackleton, worked directly with Fraser Health staff and patients to devise solutions.

PROBLEM

Falls, medication error and infection control are the three greatest dangers in a hospital setting. Fraser Health asked the Health Design Lab to provide a fresh perspective to help uncover and design innovative, perhaps even provocative, modes of encouraging a safety culture in their hospital settings.

OPPORTUNITY

Enhancing Patient Safety aims to change the culture of safety in hospitals by providing the tools for patients and their care teams to work collaboratively towards improved safety. The aim was to create tools that facilitated trust-building between patients, family members and staff, encouraged a shift in culture towards patient-centred care and created new rituals and expectations.

OUTCOME

The resulting communication campaign included a safety briefing video, a tablet based app for patients, and designs for interactive smartboards to be implemented across all Fraser Health locations. Thorough research was a major aspect of this project as it stood as a base for further work completed between Fraser Health and Emily Carr.
